The separation science and technology division was one of the first research areas in the department with its beginnings in the 1960s. It carries out teaching and scientific research on unit operations, chemical engineering thermodynamics, separation technology and processes, and membrane materials and processes. The State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering (Tsinghua University branch) was established in 1991 with the Solvent Extraction Laboratory as its basis. Currently, the division has 11 full professors and 4 associate professors, among whom one is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and one is a National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Outstanding Young Investigator. More than 30 Ph.D. or Master students are enrolled in this division each year

In the past five years, our scientific research was mainly supported by 973 and 863 projects from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), and grants from the NSFC, and related industries. Our research results are published in Lab on a Chip, JPC, AIChE Journal, Journal of Membrane Science, Chemical Engineering Science, etc. New techniques, equipment, membranes, and new separation technologies are developed for the chemical industry. More than ten national awards have been received for the achievements of our research teams. Research directions include solvent extraction equipment and technology, gas-liquid separation processes, molecular simulation and thermodynamics, membrane materials and processes, supercritical fluid technology, and micro-structured chemical processes.
